RACP

In this activity, two of Australia's leading neurologists - A/Prof Piero Perucca and A/Prof Doug Crompton - meet to discuss the identification and mitigation of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) risk in patients with ongoing/uncontrolled seizures, particularly those experiencing tonic-clonic seizures.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • 1. Describe the epidemiology, potential pathophysiological mechanisms, and risk factors of SUDEP.
  • 2.Conduct a comprehensive patient-centred risk assessment of SUDEP.
  • 3. Initiate individualised communication of all identified (direct and indirect) risk factors for SUDEP in a clinical setting.
  • 4. Evaluate and implement protective strategies which may reduce the risk of SUDEP in eligible patients.
  • 5. Prepare a systematic approach to the evaluation, communication and minimisation of SUDEP risk factors in clinical practice.
